A couple weeks ago, I received this message from my mom regarding some photos I sent her: “I love how you work with shadows. I’ve always believed shadows are where the heart hides.” This reply means two things to me…one, I got a compliment from my mother (whaaaatt!!!!!!!), two, I need to remember this quote every time I shoot.  I need to light with shadows and find emotion through darkness.

Last Sunday I shot my best friend at an apartment on a secluded street in the Hollywood Hills. For the black & whites, I shot during the Golden Hour and worked within the shadows to bring out all that rough, gritty beauty.

I’ve always been one to create patterns in my photographs. I used to hide my lucky number in backgrounds of photos. As of late, my pattern involves Isabelle modeling with all of my subjects or having my models wear my partner’s clothing. My best friend is wearing a Police shirt and jean jacket I grabbed from his drawer. I wouldn’t say these photos necessarily ‘work within shadows’, but they were super fun to shoot.

On a side note: In 2006, my bff and I made a pact to move away from Denver to Los Angeles where she could pursue acting/modeling and I would pursue photography. I still have the piece of paper we scribbled our ‘5 Year Plans’ on.
